Which Red5 streaming server fits your players
Open-source Red5 is an RTMP server written in Java. Browsers stopped playing RTMP when Adobe ended Flash Player on 31 December 2020, so it fits encoders, apps and players that still speak RTMP. Red5 Pro adds WebRTC, HLS and RTSP, so a Red5 Pro dedicated server is the one for viewers in a browser or on a phone.

Each machine below opens on the order form with Red5 already chosen. Change the processor, memory, disks, port or city there, or switch to Red5 Pro. The total updates before you pay.
On offer in New York, Bucharest, Amsterdam, San Francisco and Miami. ARM machines are not listed: neither edition of Red5 supports them.
Sizing
How many viewers one Red5 server carries
The port sets the ceiling. We count 80 percent of it as usable and assume every viewer takes the top rendition, the worst case for the port.
1 Gbps port
viewers at 720p (2.5 Mbps each), or 177 at 1080p (4.5 Mbps).
10 Gbps port
viewers at 720p, or 1,777 at 1080p. Moving up is a switch change on the same server, with the same IP addresses.
Arithmetic, not a benchmark. Disks, memory and the Java heap you give Red5 also matter at the top end. For a larger audience, see dedicated streaming servers.

What is a Red5 server?
Red5 is an open-source media server, written in Java, that takes live streams in over RTMP and sends live and on-demand video and audio out to players. A Red5 dedicated server is a physical machine that runs it for you alone. We install it on the server you order.
Is Red5 free?
The open-source edition is free under the Apache 2.0 licence, and on our bill it carries no licence fee. You pay for the machine and a one-time $29.99 for the install. Red5 Pro is a commercial licence at $83.19 a month.
Should I choose Red5 or Red5 Pro?
Choose Red5 Pro when your viewers watch in a browser or on a phone: it adds WebRTC, HLS and RTSP. Open-source Red5 is enough when your encoders, apps and players speak RTMP, since browsers no longer play RTMP.
Can Red5 be my RTMP server for OBS?
Yes. Red5 accepts RTMP publishing, so OBS, vMix, ffmpeg or a hardware encoder can push a live stream to it, and it can record that stream to FLV on the server's own disks.
How many viewers can a Red5 streaming server handle?
On a 1 Gbps port about 320 viewers at 720p or 177 at 1080p, counting 80 percent of the port as usable. On a 10 Gbps port, about 3,200 and 1,777.
How fast is a Red5 dedicated server ready?
The machine is delivered about 30 minutes after approval when it is already racked, or in 4 to 24 hours when it is built to order. We then install Red5 and email the login details within 24 hours.
Is the bandwidth unmetered?
Yes. The port is unshared and unmetered: no transfer allowance and no overage charge. The port speed is what you choose on the order form.
Is the Red5 Pro licence discounted on longer terms?
No. Paying for 3, 6 or 12 months at once lowers the machine's price, not the software's. The licence is billed every month at the same rate.
Can I install Red5 myself instead?
Yes. You have root access, so you can install any Red5 release or other streaming software yourself. Choosing it on the order form means our team installs it and answers for that install.
