02 — Mechanism
No trick, and no promotion running out in three months. Three things account for the whole difference, and each of them is checkable.
We buy HPE enterprise kit when it comes off lease, rack it in halls we run ourselves, and pass on what we did not spend. The machine is not crippled and the price is not a promotion — the capital behind it was written down years ago.
We own the racks and we run the network they sit on. Our routes are announced under our own number, which anyone can check in about thirty seconds. Nothing here is resold, so no one takes a margin on the way.
The catalogue carries 87 processor options and boots images going back to Ubuntu 14.04. Keeping a line orderable long after the industry has moved on is the mechanism behind the price, not an oversight.

03 — Comparison

04 — Deductions
Every page selling a cheap server lists only the upside, so you are right to be looking for the catch. Here is ours, in full, before you pay rather than after.
The cheapest lines are previous-generation processors at modest clocks. They are whole machines and they are not fast per core. If your workload is one thread racing a clock, buy further up the range and pay for it.
One-off, on that one cartridge line, and nowhere else in the range. It makes the first month cost more than the sticker. We would rather you read it here than find it at the checkout.
Unmetered either way — there is no metered tier anywhere in the catalogue — but a gigabit on a cartridge is an upgrade at $79 a month, where the rack servers include it. Read the port on the machine, not the headline.
The licence is charged per core on top of the machine. On the cheapest server that roughly triples the bill, which is worth knowing before you plan around the sticker. Linux is free on every line.
Every rack server reports HPE iLO with a full console. Our own records do not confirm it on some cartridges, and we would rather say so than let you find out.
Only a handful of lines rack in all five locations, and the cheapest live in one or two. If latency is what matters, pick the city first and let the catalogue show what is racked there.
No live migration, no resizing in place, no snapshot of a running system and no per-second billing. One tenant, one machine, and you plan capacity yourself.
05 — Argument
The newest processor is rarely the cheapest way to get work done. Three numbers make that case better than we could, and none of them is ours.
Across reported component failures, hard drives account for roughly 82% and processors for 0.04%. The part you are buying second-hand is the part with the lowest failure rate in the machine. The parts that do fail — disks and power supplies — are the ones we replace under the same four-hour commitment as every other tier.
Advanced Hosting, on previous-generation server economicsEnterprise servers are reported to run at 12% to 18% of capacity on average. A machine two generations back is still far more computer than most workloads ever ask for, which is why the sensible question is what you need rather than what is newest.
Advanced HostingServer memory and flash prices rose sharply through 2025 and into 2026, and the large vendors have announced double-digit increases. A range built on hardware that was bought years ago is the one part of the market that is insulated from that.

At this budget that is the real choice, and the answer is not always this one.
when the machine spends most of its life idle, when you need it for a week, or when you want to rebuild it from an image several times a day. Small and elastic is genuinely what a VPS is good at, and a whole server sitting at two percent is money you did not need to spend.
when you are already paying for a large VPS, when the workload is steady rather than spiky, when you need the disk to behave predictably, or when you have been throttled by a neighbour you cannot see. At the bottom of this range a whole machine costs about what a mid-sized VPS does, and nobody else is on it.

08 — Where
The cheapest machines rack in one or two cities each, not five. If latency matters, choose the city first — each page below shows what is racked there.
09 — Questions
Price, contract, setup, refunds and how long it really takes. Two of the three pages ranking above this one answer none of these.
The entry machine is a single Moonshot cartridge — a four-core AMD Opteron with 8 GB of memory and a small SSD, on an unmetered 500 Mbps port. It is the only line in the range that carries a setup fee, a one-off $13, so the first month costs more than the monthly figure. Live prices are read straight from the shelf on this page.
Yes. Every line here is one physical machine with one tenant. Nothing is virtualised, nothing is shared, and there is no neighbour to be throttled by. That is the difference between this and a VPS at a similar price.
The hardware came off lease and has already been depreciated, we own the racks it sits in, and we run the network under our own number rather than reselling somebody else’s. There is no introductory rate and no renewal step-up anywhere in the catalogue — the figure you sign up on is the figure you keep.
The processors are previous-generation and modest in clock speed, most of the cheapest lines run at 500 Mbps rather than a gigabit, Windows licences cost extra on top, and out-of-band access is not confirmed on every cartridge. Those are set out in full on this page rather than left to be discovered.
There is no metered tier in the catalogue to choose, at any speed. No allowance to exhaust, no overage line on next month’s invoice. Copying data in costs nothing at any volume, because inbound is not billed either.
No. Month to month, cancel or upgrade whenever you like. Paying for three, six or twelve months up front takes 5%, 10% or 15% off, and that is the only thing that moves the price — downward, and only if you choose it.
There is no money-back guarantee, and we would rather say so than imply one. What there is: a refund if we fail to provision the machine, or on request within three calendar days of activation, pro-rated and less a 15% administrative fee. Built-to-order machines and payments made in crypto are outside that.
The build itself normally runs about half an hour; across 18,922 completed builds the median was 24 minutes and 99.8% finished inside the hour. What usually separates that from the machine being in your hands is payment and fraud review, which adds a couple of hours to about half of orders.
Every server includes the Basic tier at no charge: 24/7 cover with a 12-hour response commitment and four-hour hardware replacement, against a 99.9% availability SLA. Faster response tiers start at $39 a month. Almost nobody on this range buys one, which is the honest thing to say about them.
Memory, disks, the RAID level, the port and the number of addresses are all upgradable in place. Moving to a different machine means a rebuild, so if you already know the workload will grow past this range, start at the line above it rather than the cheapest one.
